Osteoporosis is defined as the loss of bone mass, disruption of bone microarchitecture, and skeletal fragility.

The CDC estimates that 12.6% of adults over age 50 suffer this diagnosis (2018), and women are more likely than men to be diagnosed. Approximately 20% of women over age 50 are diagnosed with osteoporosis.

Fancy definitions aside, osteoporosis is simply the thinning and weakening of bones, making them more susceptible to fracture.

Bones is normally made of a web-like or honeycomb appearing mesh. Collagen fibers become calcified and stiff. They are packed with water, protein, blood vessels, and other cells.

As you can see in the image, there are pores within the bone to allow fluid to flow through the bone. The image on the right is osteoporotic. The amount of bone is decreased compared to normal.
