You’ve probably heard the term “Broscience” and wondered what it means. Broscience is a field of science that originated with gym bros but has been proven true again and again over the last decade.
Before people freak out, let me just be clear that this isn’t exclusive to gym bros. Plenty of non-mainstream people follow a similar pathway.
The foundation of Broscience is far more scientific than the modern iteration of mainstream science. It’s not even close. Here are the steps of the scientific method, which is the foundation of scientific thinking, and has been for hundreds of years:
Make an observation.
Ask a question.
Form a hypothesis or testable explanation.
Make a prediction based on the hypothesis.
Test the prediction.
Iterate: use the results to make new hypotheses or predictions.
Mainstream science loosely follows these steps. However, most times they start with the answer and reason their way back to the problem. Let’s use obesity as an example. This is how modern science works, particularly from the point of view of Big Pharma:
Make an observation - people are overweight
Ask a question - can we make money on this?
Form a hypothesis or testable explanation - drugs can help this
Make a prediction based on the hypothesis - we can sell drugs to obese people
Test the prediction - yep, the drug is profitable
Iterate - that drug has side effects, let’s make a different one and sell it
This example is exaggerated but not actually far off. Most decisions made in medicine today come from monetary and government incentives. They don’t have anything to do with science.

That’s where Broscience comes in.
