Caffeine is the most popular drug in the world.
Most people in the modern world consume caffeine in some form throughout their day. Coffee, tea, soda, supplements, food. Caffeine is everywhere.
Many of us use caffeine wake up in the morning and make it through the day. A cup of coffee in the morning. Energy drink after lunch. And some tea after dinner. It adds up quickly.
For some people it’s not an issue. They can drink their one cup of coffee every morning and that’s it. It’s a healthy habit that makes them feel better with very few side effects (unless it’s loaded with sugar).
Others struggle to get the same effect they once did and therefore have to increase their intake. One small cup turns into a large cup, then 2 cups, then a Big Gulp.
This occurs because the body builds a tolerance to caffeine. As your intake increases, the amount you need to achieve the same effect increases. It’s not uncommon to see people consuming over a gram of caffeine per day in order to make it through the day. For reference, one cup of coffee is approximately 95 mg of caffeine.
Before we get into why that’s bad, let’s talk about why it’s so common.
Caffeine is, perhaps, the best performance enhancing drug known to man.
